Ooty, Steam Engine

Ooty is one of the nicest places to visit in India. People of Bangalore are lucky that one over night bus ride can take them to the lovely place also known as Udagamandalam. You can expect to see a lot of greenery, Tea Gardens, Toy Train, Boat House, Broccoli Forest, Lakes, Rose Garden, Botanical Garden, Church, Boarding Schools and more. Good things to shop from Ooty are White Tea, Green Tea, Chocolates, Kanchiwaram Sarees, Spices, Eucalyptus Oil, and Honey.

With so much to look out for, it may become difficult to experience it all in limited time. After reading this article, you will know exactly what to do and where to go in Ooty. I recommend a 3 days trip for the best experience. It can also be done over a weekend from Bangalore.

Simple steps for a memorable trip:

  • Book a Volvo ride on KSRTC (This bus departs from Shanti Nagar station in Bangalore.
  • Hotel Check-in at Ooty early morning.

Sightseeing (Day 1)

  • Boat House
  • Botanical Garden

Boat House is a nice place for boating but I liked the Botanical garden more because of it size and greenery.

Sightseeing (Day 3)

  • Spare a day in the local market for some shopping.
    • Buy Kanchiwaram Sarees only from the government shop for authentic & reasonable stuff
    • Green & White tea
    • Chocolates
    • Body oils
  • Board a night bus to head back. You may see a few wild animals at night sitting in your Volvo at around 2 AM.

In case you can squeeze some extra time, I recommend a ride in the toy train purely for the experience. It is at Conoor station that you can see the change of the historic Steam Engine.

The morning temperature in Ooty is chilly and is perfect to see the dew on thousands of Roses in the Rose Garden.
The grand attraction of Ooty is the Bhawani Lake. I was surprised that even the locals in Ooty didn’t know about this pristine place. Simply superb! If you are in Ooty, you have to be here. You can hire a taxi till Avalanche Dam, beyond this point you will have to get into Forest Reserve vehicles after seeking permission.  So be on time or you will miss this splendid trip. The Forest Reserve vehicle halts at 3 points.

  1. Broccoli Forest
  2. Bhawani Temple
  3. Bhawani Lake
